Tree and Woody Vegetation Control in Oshtemo and Richland
The Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) annual summer tree and woody vegetation
control, will be conducted in August and September 2020. The program is designed to contain
roadside woody vegetation and overhanging tree branchesthat could obstruct motorists’
vision, create drainage obstacles or cause snow and icing problemsif left unchecked.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) licensed applicator
chosen to perform the project for the RCKC is FDC Enterprises, PO Box 189, New Albany, Ohio
43054 at 1-866-270-4833. FDC Enterprises applies Krenite S or Garlon 3A that are registered
with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). A copy of the Safety Data Sheets and RCKC Tree
and Woody Vegetation brochure are available at the RCKC’s office, your township office or on
the maintenance tab of the RCKC website at www.kalamazoocountyroads.com.
The operation is not a continuous broadcast, only those roadside areas where existing woody
vegetation and tree limbs are creating safety hazards are sprayed. Applications will be made by
licensed applicators. If property owners live in a platted area, that property will not be sprayed,
however we want to share why and how the program is completed for reference. Krenite S will
be used in Oshtemo and Richland Townships and Garlon 3A will be used in Alamo, Cooper
and Kalamazoo Townships on unplatted and primary roads.
If owners would rather clear their own roadsides: Property will not be sprayed if owners
have cleared the woody vegetation, trees and limbs before the spraying program begins.
Property owners may remove woody vegetation and low hanging limbs at minimum
fourteen (14) feet up and fourteen (14) feet away from the traveled portion of the
right-of-way (14 feet from the edge of the road) or with RCKC permission prior to the
time frame specified by RCKC. If the roadside vegetation control efforts have not been
accomplished within the permitted time frame, an application of an herbicide may
occur. Property owners are encouraged to maintain their property abutting the road
right-of-way by removing roadside woody vegetation and low hanging limbs in the time
frame specified by RCKC for this activity only with the required permit application
process. Your work to prune or remove vegetation must be completed by August 2nd,
